What does ATOL cover?

ATOL protection ensures you won’t lose money or be stranded abroad if the tour operator or airline goes out of business.


  • If you’re in the UK when a travel provider fails, ATOL ensures you get a refund.
  • If you’re already abroad, ATOL ensures you’re brought home safely without additional cost.


You’ll receive an ATOL Certificate as soon as you book an ATOL-protected trip — please check it carefully and keep it safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is my money safer with Cypher Travel than booking direct?

    Yes. When you book directly with an airline, hotel or packaged holiday provide  your money is often unprotected if they fail. At Cypher Travel, your funds are held in a secure Trust Account supervised by the Travel Trust Association (TTA). We cannot access your money until you have safely returned from your trip or your tickets have been issued and the supplier has sufficient failure cover in place.

  • What is the ATOL Advantage I get with Cypher Travel?

    Most direct bookings do not come with ATOL protection. Because we source our flights through ATOL-protected suppliers, your flight-inclusive holiday or and flight only purchase is legally protected. If a supplier fails, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ensures you aren't stranded abroad and that your money is refunded.

  • I have a credit card; do I still need your protection?

    While Section 75 provides some cover for purchases over £100, it is a slow process. TTA and ATOL protection is a dedicated travel guarantee. We handle the logistics and the paperwork so you aren't left fighting a bank for a refund while stuck at an airport.

  • What happens if the principle provider goes bust before I fly or check out of my hotel?

    Booking direct often leaves you as a 'general creditor' in a long queue. With Cypher Travel, our Trust Account model means we can often rebook you on an alternative flight or provide a swift refund, ensuring your holiday plans stay on track.

  • Are there any hidden fees for this protection?

    No. Under the 2025/26 UK Price Transparency rules, your financial protection is included in the headline fare. We don’t 'drip' extra protection fees into your basket—your security is our standard.
